Chapter Four

I knew that I couldn’t go back into the main ballroom looking like a well kissed, fussed up mess. Luckily the bathroom wasn’t far and I could make it without being seen by Geoffrey or, even worse, by my father.

I locked the door behind me before leaning over one of the sinks and examining my face. The white porcelain was cold beneath my fingers and I gripped it nearly tight enough to crack. I needed to get a hold of myself or everything was going to fall apart.

But after that kiss I had no idea how I was going to go through with this. Geoffrey Kincaid would never make me feel that way. I knew it with a bone deep certainty.

A toilet in one of the stalls flushed and I looked between the stall and the locked door. I hadn’t thought to check if the room was occupied and in my emotional state I hadn’t sensed anyone near me. Thank the heavens we were so far into our territory. There were places where a mistake like that could get me killed.

Arianna walked out of the stall, her shoulders hunched. When she spotted me she straightened, a scowl on her face. “I can’t even piss in privacy.”

I didn’t know what I had done to earn her vitriol. I was supposed to mate with her stepbrother, not her boyfriend. Instead of responding, I splashed water on my face and dabbed at it with a fluffy hand towel. There was a stack of them on the counter.

Arianna washed her own hands and dried them in silence. She turned to walk away and stopped when she realized that the door was locked. I expected her to flip the lock and leave me in peace, but she surprised me by turning around and just staring at me.

Our eyes met in the mirror and after a moment I turned around to face her. “What?” I asked.

“If you can’t be good to Geoff, then let him go.” She dropped some of the attitude, but there was still a hint of confrontation in her spine.

I let a growl slip into my voice. She had no rank here and no say in my decisions. “Kincaid agreed to this.”

She scoffed. “Of course he agreed. What man in his position wouldn’t?” She laced her fingers together and squeezed them so tightly that I thought that she was only doing it to keep from crossing her arms.

“Why do you think that I would hurt him?” I didn’t know the man, I feared that I would never love him, but I didn’t wish him ill.

Arianna took a deep breath, but she didn’t respond.

“It is a good match,” I insisted. “And it’s far too late to stop it even if we wished.” Which we didn’t, I didn’t.

That reassurance was beginning to wear thin.

“This is all so...bloodless,” Arianna mused. “You hand yourself over like a good little debutante and Geoff takes your hand like a gentleman. We’re werewolves, not aristocrats. At least in the old days you had to work for these arranged matings.
